VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Volunteer Job Descriptions

Bullpen The bullpen is the holding area for swimmers. Working from a heat sheet, organize the swimmers in lane order for their events, make sure relay teams are in the correct order, and escort swimmers to the lane loaders. To help ensure safety and a smoothly run meet, bullpen workers need to stay in the bullpen.. While it is not the bullpen worker’s responsibility to babysit swimmers, it is his/her responsibility to alert CSC parent reps of misconduct that causes or may cause harm to swimmers and/or pool property. Bullpen workers may need to remind swimmers to clean-up after themselves and make sure the bullpen is clean after all meets, home and away. All parents should periodically check in on their swimmers. It is not the responsibility of the bullpen volunteer to search for swimmers not in the bullpen.

Lane Loaders Volunteers will be assigned specific lanes to monitor throughout the meet. Referring to a heat sheet, stands behind starting blocks and escorts swimmers to the proper lane. Advances the swimmers to next seat forward as heats are swum. Ensures each swimmer in his/her lane is on the starting block at appropriate time. Reminds swimmer (especially young ones) of their stroke, two hand touch, etc.

Starter Assistant (only for home meets) The starter assistant records any disqualifications determined by the started official and makes sure that the runners carry the DQ slip with the heat score cards to the card judges.

Timers Volunteers are assigned a specific lane to time. Using a stopwatch provided by the team, the timer starts the watch using the strobe light of the starting machine as the starting signal and stops the watch when any part of the swimmer touches the wall. There are three timers per lane. All three timers record their time on the timer sheet. Brief meeting with Starter at the beginning of each meet is required.

Alternate Timer The alternate timer starts the watch at the beginning of every race and helps any timer whose stopwatch did not start correctly.

Runners Collects timer sheets from each of the six lanes and any DQ slips from the Starter Assistant after each event and delivers them promptly to the card judge.

Card Judge Receives timer sheets and any DQ slips from the runner and verifies the event with timer sheets. Records any DQs and circles the middle time. Number the times in order of fastest to slowest times.

Computer Entry/Scorekeeper This job requires the ability to enter times into a computer. Each team will supply a Computer Entry worker so there is one representative from each team entering the data. Receives timer sheets from the card judges and enters each swimmer’s time into the program. Scores should be kept confidential and shown only to the parent reps and coaches.

Hospitality (Home meets only) Volunteers walk through the meet offering volunteers and coaches from both teams fresh water.
